The intricate anatomy of the hand and upper extremity, when injured, sometimes requires very delicate surgery, often involving an operative microscope. These kinds of surgical procedures are performed by a Fellowship-trained hand surgeon, followed by further treatment by a Certified Hand Therapist.
Restoration of the hand involves technically complex surgeries and demands advanced skills, and a high level of competence. The Hand Center employs more Fellowship-trained hand surgeons and more Certified Hand Therapists than any hospital or other orthopedic practice in the area.
Additionally, Orthopedic Associates and its surgeons, in partnership with Kettering Health Washington Township, have made a significant financial and operational commitment to the development and operation of The Hand & Orthopedic Center of Excellence, the only dedicated, outpatient orthopedic facility of its kind in the greater Miami and Ohio Valleys.
Orthopedic Associates and Kettering health's continued collaboration has facilitated free hand surgeries for eligible patients lacking medical insurance one day a year. Conducted in September at the Orthopedic Center of Excellence within the Southview Medical Center, this collective initiative has provided individuals lacking financial resources access to high-quality care that would otherwise be unattainable, reinforcing our shared dedication to community service and furthering our commitment to our patients.

A Certified Hand Therapist (CHT) is an Occupational or Physical Therapist with five years of training in hand therapy who has completed a comprehensive test of advanced clinical skills and theory in upper- extremity rehabilitation. CHTs must demonstrate continued professional development and competency by recertifying every five years.

The Hand Center, which is the largest such facility in Ohio, employs the most Certified Hand Therapists. Our surgeons and therapists work together to provide the highly specialized care that helps our patients quickly return to activities of daily living.
Certified Hand Therapists act as a bridge between patient and physician. Therapists are with the patient before, during and after surgery, and they interact daily with physicians concerning patient progress.
The majority of hand injuries can be treated without surgery. In the event a patient’s condition changes, however, The Hand Center will refer him or her to a surgeon for same-day consultation.
